Ingredients

  • 1 stick softened butter
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/2 tsp garlic salt
  • 1 to 2 tbsp dijon mustard (if you don’t like mustard, leave it out)
  • 8 to 10 hard rolls (I like the poppy seed, but the kids like plain)
  • 1 1/2 to 2 pounds shaved deli ham
  • 8 to 12 slices swiss cheese
  • Tin foil

Instructions

  • Mix the first 4 ingredients.
  • Spread mixture generously on both sides of buns.
  • Next add some ham and 1 slice of cheese to make the sandwiches. Wrap each sandwich in foil.
  • Bake on a cookie sheet in a preheated 325 degree oven for 12 to 15 minutes until buns get toasted, and cheese is melted.
  • You can also cook these on the grill, indirect heat, meaning not directly on the hot coals or gas flame.

I love these. I have never cooked them on the grill. How long over indirect heat would you suggest heating them?

Hi Pam. They don’t take long. Make sure the grill in on low heat or put them on indirect heat meaning on a side of the grill that isn’t as hot or the burners aren’t on. Maybe 5 minutes. You can carefully unwrap one to see if it’s toasted and melty. They are so good! Glad you love them too!

I am plan on putting in Turkey roaster. Should I bake them first?

    1. Amy Hanten says:

Hi Pam. No need to pre-bake them. You can just wrap them in foil and put them in your Nesco Roaster. I’d set it to 375 and bake for 30 minutes or until they get toasted and cheese is melted. Then turn down to very low just to keep them warm. Hope you love them! -Amy

These are my absolute favorite and a weekly staple for us. Great for busy families that eat at opposite times!

  4. Looks delicious! Quick question – the roll crust in the photo looks flaky but the hard roll in the video isn’t flaky. Did you use a different type of roll/bun for the photo? Thanks.

      Hi Bethany,
No I used the same hards rolls. They do crisp up when you bake them. These sandwiches are AMAZING! -Amy

  5. Delicious indeed! I added chopped onions and poppy seeds into the spread to add just a little more taste.
