Trip to Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula

Two years ago my daughter Ireland and I decided we wanted to hit the road and explore some place new. We wanted to get out of our comfort zone and get a little adventurous too! Road trip time! I’m all about a fun road trip!
We hopped in the car and headed to Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula! Arlo, the dog came along too! Let’s just say it was one of the best trips EVER! I knew when we got to Copper, Harbor, Michigan this was someplace really special! Our motel, the King Copper, wasn’t fancy but it was just perfect!
Check out that view!
Every morning we’d wake up early and watch the sunrise.
Then, it was time for coffee and fresh doughnuts with homemade thimbleberry frosting at Jamsen’s Fish Market and Bakery.
I’d never heard of thimbleberries. Have you? Well I’m now in love with them! They grow wild here. They are gorgeous and I think they are even more delicious than raspberries!
After breakfast it was time to let Arlo dive in for a swim. Lake Superior is pretty cold but he didn’t seem to mind a bit.
Then, at around 8am every morning we’d watch as the ferry took off full of passengers headed for the 4 hour trip to Isle Royal National Park. Watching that ferry sail off never got old. I could watch that all day but, it was now time to tackle the day and get a little wild.
This area is known for some of the best mountain biking in the country. Okay, let’s do this! The Keweenaw Adventure Company got us all geared up with bikes and helmets. They taught us the basics and then we were off to nearby Brockway Mountain.
I gotta be honest, I had no idea mountain biking really involved biking down a mountain. I guess I should have researched this a bit more. YIKES! Come to find out it’s oner of the toughest mountain biking in the country. It was a bit terrifying! But, we did it! I’m happy to report we made it down the mountain in one piece! Not sure I’ll mountain bike Brockway mountain again. But the view from there is spectacular! You can drive up too!
The next day it was time for another big adventure. This time on the water. Time to get geared up again for a 9 hour kayak trip on Lake Superior.
We lucked out. The water was like glass. Absolutely perfect conditions for an all day paddle.
The scenery was breathtaking!
Half way we stopped for lunch and a beautiful hike to a waterfall. It’s a day I’ll never forget. Pure Michigan magic! In fact this mother daughter trip was one of the best trips of my life!
We even saw a bear! And, an otter! On our last night we took a sunset cruise.
The perfect way to say goodbye to this gorgeous part of the country. We hated to leave but we can’t wait to come back and explore even more! Have you ever been to this area? If so, please share! I’d love to hear about your adventures!
I’m from the UP, yes it is a beautiful area in God’s country. The Keweenaw Peninsula keeps on giving. There is always new sites to see & in fall the color is fantastic. I think the people help make the U P what it is, they are friendly and always willing to help you fine new places to explore. Glad you got to discover the Keweenaw Peninsula
My husband and I went up here the week that Brett Favre left the Packers. I recall beautiful walks on the beaches atCopper Harbor, and a delicious fish fry! We left on that ferry and spent two days on Isle Royale, which was amazing in itself. No tv or cell phones. When we got back on the ferry, our captain announced “Brett Favre is a New York Jett”. Many fond memories of that trip.
Looks like a wonderful and adventurous trip. I really enjoyed your photos and your sense of adventure. Thanks for sharing, never thought of this area for a girls getaway. I might just check it out.
