Happy Trails Pop, Until We Meet Again! Tweet 9th July 20139/07/13 Amy's Blog Amy Hanten 4 Comments He always had a smile on his face. My family had to say goodbye to a person very special to us recently. Bob’s dad, my father-in-law, and my kiddos grandfather is no longer with us. He passed away peacefully. Bob, my son, Riley and a handful of other family members were at his bedside when it happened. What a beautiful way to leave this world! It’s never easy to say goodbye and we’ve all shed quite a few tears of late but, we take comfort that he is now out of pain and in a better place. His name was Robert Sweeney but, we all called him “Pop”. He loved his wife Carol, his kids, and his grandkids dearly! Bob keeps saying, “I’ll never be able to talk to my dad again.” I keep telling him that’s not true. You can still talk to him. And, we have been. We felt his presence when we went to mass over the weekend at one of our favorite places, The Cross in the Woods. It was the most gorgeous night! Pop would have loved it! And, the pizza dinner afterwards too! Pop loved to eat! When Bob and I were dating I remember cooking a summer dinner for his parents. My famous Baby Red Potato Salad and my BBQ Ribs ‘n Beer. Well that’s all it took! I had a fan! Over the years I loved cooking for Pop! Carol, or “Gramee” as we call her, and Pop celebrated their 50th anniversary a few years back. We all wanted to make it something really special! Something they’d never forget. I helped plan a weeklong celebration in Las Vegas. All 17 of us, kids, spouses, grandkids met in Las Vegas over the holidays. What a blast! The last night we really did it up with a limo ride down the Vegas strip. It was a really big limo! As you can see the kiddos loved it! Pop did too! Then, a fancy dinner. We all dressed up! There was a big chocolate cake. At the end of the meal we gave Gramee and Pop an album filled with family photos, memories and kind thoughts. The evening was magical! The last few years Pop was wheelchair bound and had to live apart from Gramee in a nursing home. She still went to visit him every day! Talk about true love! I’ll never forget when my family flew in for a recent Thanksgiving. You know me, I love to cook. The whole Sweeney clan was there, including Pop. It was so wonderful to have the whole family together! Pop loved it! They didn’t know but I snapped a picture of Ireland and Pop looking at that anniversary photo album we had put together a few years ago. It’s a picture I’ll never get out of my mind. Priceless! I think this is how we are all feeling right now. Goodbyes are not forever. Goodbyes are not the end. They simply mean I’ll miss you Until we meet again! And, for Pop, an Irishman, an Irish Blessing… May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand. Thank you friends for your thoughts and prayers for our family during this difficult time!
