Goodbye and Thank You Levi! Tweet 30th April 201330/04/13 Amy's Blog Amy Hanten 25 Comments I’ll never forget the day we brought him home. The kids had no idea. It was a surprise. And, as you can see, my daughter Ireland was pretty excited about our new family member. Ireland had been begging for a dog for years. She’s one of those kids who stops to pet and talk to every dog or animal she sees. My son, Riley, not so much. When Riley was just a toddler he had an experience with my sister’s very active puppy who jumped on him, knocked him over and buried his shoes. It scared him to death and after that he never wanted a dog. We knew the only way to get Riley over his fear of dogs was to get one. It JUST had to be the right one. And then one day, there he was. He walked right in to the Fox studio where I was getting ready to do a recipe on TV. He was the biggest chocolate lab I’d ever seen. He was the “Tailwagger of the Week”. Deb, a friend and wonderful lady from the Fox Valley Humane Association, knew we were looking. And, she said, “Amy, I think this is the one.” The rest is history. It took Riley no time to warm up to the big guy. At first, he said, “No way! This dog is going back!” Next thing I know, I watched out the window as the two went on a long walk together. As you can see they were best buds ever since! We adopted Levi when he was about 5 years old and we had about 8 wonderful years with him! He was a gentle giant. He put up with bath time, even though I don’t think he was a big fan. He was kind and patient, even when we dressed him up for holidays, which I’m sure he hated! If dogs could talk, I’m sure we would have gotten an earful! He loved long walks, summers and fall at the cottage and even the occasional dip in Lake Michigan. He loved hanging out with me in the kitchen too. Hmm. I wonder why? LOL! But,this winter was really tough on the ‘ole guy. As a family we decided it was time. He was in pain. We hated to see that. We picked Riley up from college and we were all there together to say goodbye. It was terribly sad. It was the first time for us. But, it was also peaceful. His tail wagged until the very end. So, thank you Levi! Thank you for all the memories. We will treasure them! Thanks for all the support and kindness, friends! Sure hope this gets easier! Please tell me it will! The house feels so weird and quiet without him in it! A friend shared this. It describes perfectly how I am feeling right now. You no longer greet me as I walk through the door. You are not there to make me smile, to make me laugh anymore. Life seems quiet without you! You were far more than a pet. You were a family member, a friend. A loving soul, I’ll never forget!
