Birthday Girl!

Birthday Girl!

“No, mom, I don’t need a cake.”

You know your daughter is growing up when she says that. My daughter, Ireland celebrated her 14th birthday this week. No balloons. No fancy parties. All she wanted was a weekend at the cottage with her two best friends. Really? Are you serious? I can handle that! No problem! I used to go all out for her birthday parties. From the luau themed one to the Disney princess party. One time she had a huge slumber party. I’ll never forget that night. She didn’t want to leave anyone out so she invited every single girl in the class. And, get this, they all came. Yikes! I’m not sure we got much sleep that night!

Birthday GirlAnyway this year was really low key, but still special! We celebrated her birthday with a visit to one of her favorite places. Ireland loves going to church. She always has. So, we went to an outdoor mass at the beautiful Cross in the Woods in Indian River, MI. As you can see the girls loved it! Have you ever been? If not, you need too! It’s the biggest cross in the world and the grounds are gorgeous. We try and go there at least a few times a year. The weather was perfect this time.

After church it was time for dinner. We went to our favorite up north pizza place. My family has been going to Vivio’s (also in Indian River) for decades. It’s a family run place with red checkered tablecloths. Nothing fancy but, still some of the best pizza around. A great big salad to start with for the table is always a must too! So, even though she didn’t want a cake, I knew she wouldn’t turn down dessert. The waitress surprised the birthday girl with a great big brownie sundae after dinner! She brought a few extra spoons for her friends to dig in too!

Happy Birthday, sweetie! I can’t believe you’re 14 years old!
