20 Reviews of Meat Pie

This is very similar to an English recipe that my mother made and all of us six kids loved it. She added Oxo (boullion cubes) (or you could use Bisto found in stores with an international aisle) and once she cooked and drained the browned meat, she would add 3Tbs bisto and 2Tbs of flour mixed with 1/2 cup of cold wter to thicken the gravy. She would cool the mixture before adding to the pie crust. It was wonderful. My brothers still ask me to make meat pie when they visit from England.

So I read all the reviews and decided to make a few additions. I made the recipe as written but the added some frozen peas and carrots (diced). I am on a cilantro kick so I added some. Salt and pepper and it was a WONDERFUL comfort food. Will be making this often when the weather is cold here. Thank you so much for sharing your Grandma’s recipe. : )

Wow! My husband thought he died & went to heaven after trying this reciepe.
It reminded him of a similar reciepe that his mom made in the 60′s. It sure was good.
I tweaked it with dill weed salt & pepper. Excellent.. Thanks for the reciepe Jennifer.

This was incredibly disappointing. It smelled so good in the oven but had zero flavor. It was missing something like a white or brown gravy maybe? Even just adding salt didn’t help this out much. There are great recipes on this website but this was not one of them.

Hi Jess. I’m sorry you didn’t like it. This is supposed to be more like a pasty, not a pot pie. I think gravy would be wonderful on the side for dipping. -Thanks! -Amy

This is not suppose to be a pot pie. It’s a meat and potato recipe. As I stated earlier, it would take away from the recipe.

I’m sorry and surprised you didn’t like it either. This is my Grandma’s recipe which she used in our family for over 30 years. She passed away in 2005, so I decided to post this recipe as she created it. I thought about adding spices or additional food items for more flavor, but I thought that would take away from our tradition. She always served this recipe at holiday meals and our family loved it! We used ketchup, salt and pepper when desired. Gravy no, it would take away from the recipe, but if you choose to do that, it’s up to you.

What do you mean by crumbled? Am I correct in assuming browned?

      Yes, crumbled means browned.

But, you do not brown the meat before cooking it. It browns while cooking. Crumbling using your fingers to break the meat apart, so it’s not in one big chunk.
