Move-In Day

Move-In DayWe did it! One kid off to college! Yes! We moved my oldest, Riley, into his college dorm this week.  Boy, those dorm rooms are pretty small.  Ireland and I struggled making his bed.  As, you can see he got the top bunk.   After his clothes were hung, towels folded, and his two alarm clocks were set (he’s a sound  sleeper), it was  off to the college book store.

Can you say ouch! Those books and that college sweatshirt are expensive!  Then, we headed back to the dorm room where we met Riley’s roommate, Dylan, and his parents.  Great people! Turns out Riley and Dylan have lots in common ! They hit it off right away. They both love history! Both even want to be teachers!  How cool is that! So, everything was going great! I was keeping it together.  No Kleenex yet.  We were all starving, so we went to a great burger joint near campus. Then, toward the end of the meal it started to  sink in.  Alright, this was really happening.  It was time.  Ouch! This was tough. We hugged and said our goodbyes.  Then, when I got in my car to drive home, I admit it.  The tears just kept coming.

I already miss him and it’s only been a couple days.  And, it’s not just me.  Levi, the dog, keeps looking around the house for him. I’m so excited for him. I know, it’s time! You need to let them fly and all that stuff but, but,  it’s feeling really weird! I just can’t believe he’s not going to be in our  house anymore. I have no idea where the time went!  Wow!

  1. Amy:
We took our girls up to your back yard (UWGB) last week. It’s really not right to have Riley so close to home. Is he going to do his own laundry? Thanks for sharing and for all of your news letters. Being a Celiac, I find it easy to convert most of your recipes to gluten free.
Send me a recipe for homemade pesto. I have a gigantic basil plant.

Oh…Who is the coed on Riley’s bunk? You attached the photo to your letter!!!

  2. Hang in there Amy. It hits us moms hard. As you said we have to let them spread their wings and fly. Just think how he will so much more long to be home to your great meals after eating dorm food. My daugthers request their favorite dishes for their times visiting home and then they raid my pantry and load up with special treats I made and snacks for their return to campus. Remember this is just a short season in life. Thinking and praying for you.

  3. Amy, at least you will get to spend more time with your daughter and your husband too. Look at it this way he didn’t go to collage in a other state or city of out of the u.s.a. at all. I will pray for you and your family that his collage days will come to a end and he will be back home to you and your husband and daughter fast.

Amy, I can remember when you did a segment on Fox 11 YEARS ago. You were decorating Riley’s “little boy” room with some ladies from the area that had a decorating business. Time does fly! Good Luck to you & your family as you learn to handle this new phase of life. 🙂
