Doggie Paddle

We’ve noticed lately that Levi, our 11-year-old Chocolate Lab, has started to slow down a bit. Okay, quite a bit.  He’s always loved to go on long walks with us. He’d do 5 or 6 miles, no problem. Not lately.  We can barely get him to walk a quarter of a mile and then he’s pooped!  We were worried! What’s up? So,  after x-rays,  blood  tests, and yes, a very big vet bill, the conclusion is, he’s getting old. Aren’t we all!  He’s in good health but the vet says it’s been a long winter and we need to get this dog back in shape. You know, build up some muscle. She suggested water therapy. “What!”, Bob says, “Swimming lessons for dogs?”  YEP!  So, we did it. The whole family went. Let me tell you,  it was something to see! Getting Levi in a life jacket was one thing.  Then we had to coax him to get into this whirlpool type of thing.  Levi wasn’t too sure about this whole thing! But, he did it! Just five minutes in this therapy pool equals a 5 mile walk. At least that’s what they say.  Jennifer and the folks at Liberty K9 in the Green Bay area were great. Guess what? I think It’s working! Levi walked a full mile! Looks like we’re headed back to the pool again soon. Just watch out when Levi gets out of that pool and shakes off.  It’s like we all went for a little swim!
